Chiropractic for Text Neck: How Can This Treatment Help You?

Written By East Side Chiropractic on November 30, 2017

Thanks (or, should we say, no thanks) to new technologies, text neck is the latest buzzword to be thrown around the health industry.

Recent studies have revealed just how serious this new condition is becoming, with our usage of tablets, smartphones, laptops, and other electronic devices contributing to this “epidemic.”

In his studies, Dr. Kenneth Hansraj revealed that, on average, our heads weigh 10-12 lbs. However, as we look down at our devices, the weight we’re placing on our spines increases. When tilting your head to a 15-degree angle, the weight of your head becomes 27 lbs., but if you tilt it as far as 60 degrees, it weighs as much as 60 lbs.

The result?

Given the amount of time many of us spend on our devices, an increasing number of us are complaining of pain in our necks and/or spines, with some experiencing long-lasting damage.

When Should You Seek Chiropractic Help for Text Neck?

Common symptoms of text neck include soreness and neck pain, particularly at the end of the day when you’ve spent a lot of time looking at your phone or computer. However, over time, these symptoms can increase to include upper back pain, which can range from severe muscle spasms to chronic, nagging pain.

You may also experience a tight and painful sensation in your shoulders, which often follows a muscle spasm. Furthermore, if your cervical nerve is pinched, you may find the pain extends down your arm into your hand, perhaps even being teamed with neurological symptoms.

How Can Chiropractic Treatment Help Text Neck?

You should seek chiropractic treatment for text neck in Miami if you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms or you’re concerned about how much time you’re spending looking downward.

Your chiropractor will be able to show you how to improve your posture so you’re no longer stooping your head forward. You will need to work at keeping your shoulders back and your back straight, while trying to keep your spine neutral when looking at technology.

At the same time, your chiropractor will be able to help you with a comprehensive treatment plan that incorporates massage therapy and manual adjustments.

By committing yourself to the exercises and posture improvements you can make at home, along with regular visits to your chiropractor, you should start to feel the pain in your neck easing.
